Projects
As part of the Berri Centenary, Berri Barmera Council staff, Berri Centenary Committee members and volunteers are involved with a number of projects.
This page provides more detail on the sorts of projects currently underway and provides you with access to a number of supporting resources: -
Berri Centenary Community Newspaper Project
The Committee Community News group has successfully released the first issue of the Berri Community News Centenary newspaper (just prior to Easter 2011) and are now working on the second issue. Both issues have been supported by the Berri War Memorial Community Centre and local businesses in the local community.
Copies are $2.00 each and can be purchased from all Council Offices, Libraries and Visitor Information Centres.
Berri Centenary Community Involvement
In early March 2010 the Berri Barmera Council sent letters to Berri and district clubs and organisations asking them to commit to leading and organising a Centenary event. Among other things, we ask if your club or organisation has a pre-existing event planned for 2011 that it can be branded as a Centenary event.
You can download the Club/Organisation Involvement form here and can still register events throughout the Centenary year.
Berri History Book
The Council commissioned an experienced and well respected author, Mr Rob Linn to write a book about the history of Berri and surrounds. The book is called “Berri : life in a river town” and was released for sale on 9th February 2011 after more than 3 years of planning and research. Check this website for more information on pricing and availability.
Berri District Council Minutes
Volunteers have recording important information and events from the old minutes of the Berri District Council dating from 1922 to 1996. Presently we have managed to summarise the minutes from 1922 to 1967.
Berri Organisation Histories
In early March 2010 the Berri Barmera Council sent letters to Berri and district organisations, clubs and societies asking them to record and send in their histories. Information requested included: club/organisation name, previous names (if any), date formed, inaugural committee members, clubroom location, events or tasks undertaken, group milestones and any photographs.
You can download the Club/Organisation History form here if you haven’t yet managed to submit your organisation history.
Collection of Berri Memories
The Berri Barmera Council has been seeking people with memories and stories (including photographs, movies, and other memorabilia) from their families of living and growing up in the Berri district. If you would like to share your memories, or if you know someone who has memories to share, please contact the Berri Library & Information Centre, 8595-2666; email: berri.library@tafesa.edu.au or visit the library at Kay Avenue in Berri.
Collection of Berri Oral Histories
27 people in the community have been interviewed about their Berri recollections. All of these interviews have been transcribed by a very dedicated volunteer but we still need help to check and edit some of the transcripts.
If you can help with this project, please contact the Berri Library & Information Centre on 08 8595 2666.
